Children make things
before they learn to question them.

Before we wonder
what it means.

Before we think about
who will see it.

Children don't seem to need
a reason to begin.

A colour is enough.

Then another.

Then another.

They follow what feels interesting
and see where it takes them.

There is no picture
they are trying to get right.

No perfect combination.

No need to decide
whether it should be something
or nothing at all.

They are simply making.

We grow out of this,
or perhaps we just get distracted.

We start thinking about the result
before we've enjoyed the process.

We choose the colours
that belong together.

We imagine what someone else
might think.

We ask what it is supposed to be.

And somewhere in all that thinking,
the pleasure of trying
can get lost.

Children don't seem to mind
when every colour meets
and the whole thing turns brown.

They were never trying
to make something perfect.

They were just seeing 
what could happen.
